Big Ideas Covered
Week 5 focused on the concept of division.
The image below identifies the BIG IDEAS of Week 5.

This video explains the concept of partition division and quotition division.
Prior to Week 5, I did not know that there are two types of division. I simply thought division was division. As a future educator, I will ensure that I identify both types of division to each student through using partition and quotition mats.
Concept, Skill or Strategy
The concept of division is the separating of a number into equal parts. Although there are two different types of division, the language and materials which would be used to teach each type are quite similar.

Misconception
A common misconception that a student may develop in relation to division is thinking that division is commutative (Mathematics Navigator, n.d.). This misconception may develop as multiplication is commutative, and when taught division, a student is often taught to think multiplication. As a future educator, I could remediate this misconception through clearly identifying to each student that division is not commutative, through writing clear examples on the whiteboard and/or using concrete materials.
ACARA + Scootle

Year Level: 2, 5 and 6
What are Factors? is a scootle resource which could be used to teach the concept of factors at either the children’s or materials language stage. A caution that I would have when using this resource is that a lot of information is given in a very short time which may be difficult for each student to properly comprehend what is being taught.
Resource or Teaching Strategy
Sorting Cherries on an Ice Cream is a resource which could be used to teach the concept of partition division. I have actually observed this resource being used within a Year 1 classroom whilst on placement, in which this resource aligns with both the children’s and materials language stage. A limitation of Sorting Cherries on an Ice Cream is that it may become quite repetitive, especially if being completed independently.

Concept, Skill or Strategy: Textbook
Reys et al, p. 271 identifies the concept of partition sharing problems. Within partition sharing problems, “a collection of objects is to be distributed equally into a given number of groups” (Reys et al, 2017). This concept would be taught in Year 2 at the children’s language stage, using materials such as toys and lollies.
