Big Ideas Covered

Week 7 focused on the multiple concepts of place value, and the related teaching sequence.

The images below identify the BIG IDEAS of Week 7.

I found the tutorial very interesting as I learnt about different number bases. I hadn’t actually been taught about different number bases before, so although it was interesting, I did find it quite difficult to understand. Furthermore, I also found the lecture on the teaching sequence of place value very helpful. As a future educator, I will ensure that I teach each student different number bases using MAB Blocks.

Concept, Skill or Strategy

Within place value, the position of a digit will determine the value (Reys et al, 2017). For example, the value of the digit 4 with 450 is 400 and the value of the digit 4 with 45 is 40.

Misconception

A misconception that a student may develop is that a number is to be written how it is read aloud (Reys et al, 2017). For example, 464 may be read aloud to a student, in which an educator would say “four hundred and sixty-four”. Yet, if this student does not understand important place value concepts and how to write a number, it is quite likely that this student would write 400644. As a future educator, I could remediate this misconception through teaching each student how to write a number using a place value sheet and a numeral expander.

Importance of Zero

Year Level: Foundation and 1

Importance of Zero is a scootle resource which could be used to teach the concept of zero as a place holder within place value. This resource aligns with the symbolic language stage. A possible limitation of this resource is that the character within the video speaks very quick which can make it difficult for a student to comprehend what is being said.

Resource or Teaching Strategy

Place Value Ice-Cream Cones is a fantastic resource which could be used to teach the concept of place value. When using this resource, a student is required to represent a number in written form, as an equation, using MAB Blocks, and using place value terminology. Therefore, a student must be at the symbolic language stage to use Place Value Ice-Cream Cones. A limitation of this resource is that a student may find it quite difficult to complete independently if all cards (ice-cream flavours) are given at once, especially if the concept of place value has only just been taught.

Concept, Skill or Strategy: Textbook

Reys et al, pp. 221-222, explains the concept of using ungrouped and pre-grouped materials to develop each students’ understanding of place value. Through ungrouped materials, each student is able to decide wether a group of ten or one hundred can be formed and if so, use tape to form a group. I would teach this concept in Year 1, in which I would give each student paddle pop sticks and string and ask each student to form as many groups of ten as possible.
